Sharing online and printing

Funny thing about social media: Millions of terrific photos are shared daily but I wonder how many of those actually make it to print.  We (I) sometimes get so caught up on sharing digital versions of our photography and the number of likes we garner that it becomes very easy to overlook the value of printing.

Having learned how to work a camera when digital wasn't even a thing yet, I'm no stranger to making prints in a darkroom.  These days, I don't have the space to continue with traditional darkroom methods and so my contrast tweaks, dodging and burning are all done digitally.  Still, I find it oddly satisfying (and also a little frustrating!) to see how my prints turn out on different papers, where I think improvements could be made and trying again - Similar to the traditional darkroom I learned in.  Colour introduces a whole new set of variables but, with practice comes perfection..or close to it!  I wish all of my digital followers could view my photos in my modest gallery so for now, a snapshot will have to do!

About time

Well it only took 8 months (lol!) but I'm finally doing something with the page. Since the last post, I lost my day job (times are tough if you're in the energy sector in Albert), welcomed our first child into the world and have been shooting a lot more.  Turns out I'm really into time lapse photography too!  The processing and editing in post is a little daunting but has been worth learning so far.  I hope to post some of that work in the coming weeks.  Please enjoy the new site and feel free to give me a follow on the twitters and instagrams!

Like I said...

I kind of anticipated being terrible at updating this blog but it's been a busy last few months.  In that time I've been out to the Rocky mountains a few times as well as Hong Kong and New York City.  I wasn't able to bring the film beast to Hong Kong but luckily, I had it for NYC.  15 rolls of film later..!  It's taking a bit of time to develop the black and white stuff since I do it myself but so far I'm pretty pleased with the negatives.  The print is where the real work begins and I hope to have something to show you soon.  In the meantime though, I put together a time lapse video I shot in time square. Enjoy!

Here we go again!

To be honest, I didn't think I'd have another website again.  I love photography, I love the process and I love the finished product.  I just tire of sitting in front of a computer when I spend the majority of my work week in front of one..!  I'm sure a lot of you could relate.

Anyway, I caved.

I hope to use this platform not only as a means to show my work but also as a way to talk about it, or upcoming work, trips I'm planning, places I'd like to go, maybe about my process and workflow, may poll the audience...? We'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, please enjoy what's here!  I hope to add more as I get around to scanning some of my old 35mm slides and shooting new stuff!  I've just recently found myself with a drone and I'm now able to combine my love of photography with my love of flight so expect more aerial content soon.  And now I'm rambling...
